The Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra (SSK) at Guwahati is being run by a Registered Society named “Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra Society” consisting of (a) a General Council (b) an Executive Council and (c) an Academic Council. The Honourable Chief Minister of Assam is the chairman of the Society.
The construction of the Complex has been fully funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt of India, the total construction cost being Rs. 20.35 crores. On 9th November 1998, the then Honourable President of India, K.R. Narayanan bestowed Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra to the Nation.
The DONER Ministry, Govt of India, as providing the funds for the construction of an auditoria complex namely the Srimanta Sankaradeva International Convention Centre, in the 2nd phase.
The institution is being maintained with the time to time grants from the State Government as well as from its own sources of income like the entry fee and the rentals from different components of the complex that are offered for use to various organizations and institutions. Funds are also being received as aid from the Central Government for specific projects apart from donations from various sources.
Objectives of Kalakshetra:
The main objectives of the SSK are:
(a) to protect, promote and preserve the cultural heritage of the people of Assam;
(b) to set up institutes of dance, drama, music, fine-arts and crafts, etc., for the purpose
mentioned above;
(c) to promote research in the field of music, dance, drama and fine-arts etc. and publish
literatures on them;
(d) to encourage exchange of ideas and techniques of performing arts, fine-arts and
crafts between different ethnic groups of the state;
(e) to promote cultural exchange in the field of performing art, fine-arts and crafts with
other states; and
(f) to establish a library and a museum.
Components of Kalakshetra:
Spread over a sprawling campus of 16.28 hectares the Kalakshetra has the following components to work for the fulfillment of the above objectives:
1. A Sahitya and Sangeet Natak Bhavan
2. A Lalit Kala Bhavan
3. A Cultural Museum (Purbajyoti Museum)
4. An International convention center (Auditoria Complex)
5. A Heritage Park
6. An Open Air Theatre
7. Bakari Mancha
8. An Artists’ Village,
9. Audio Recording Studio & Archive,
10. Children Park
11. State Level Renewable Energy Park
12. Sound & Light Show
13. MPCC at Children Park
All of these components strive to make the complex a living nerve centre of cultural excellence of Assam that inspire a visitor from the State to know about his/her own cultural heritage and thus encourage to preserve and promote the precious legacy. Visitors from outside get the glimpses of the rich and vibrant culture of the region.
